Compliance Through Pollution Prevention Approach to Reduce Garnet Blasting Media Wastes

Hill Air Force Base used garnet to mechanically strip paint from landing gear and missile trailers in one of three large walk-in booths. Blasting removes chromium, cadmium, copper, aluminum, oxide particles, oil, and grease. The used medial is pneumatically conveyed to a cyclone separator. Large particles are returned to the media feed pot for reuse while the fines re-transported to a baghouse. The spent media is periodically discharged and disposed of as a hazardous waste. Over 120,000 lbs. of the Cr- and Cd-contaminated waste were generated in 1999; this rose to 237,000 lb in 2000.
