Aircraft Measurements of Tropospheric Ozone in the Lake Michigan Region

The spatial distribution of the tropospheric ozone in the Lake Michigan region has been observed during a series of aircraft measurements conducted during the summers of 1995 through 1999 as part of the Lake Michigan Ozone Study (LMOS) and the Ozarks Isoprene Experiment (OZIE). These aircraft measurements were done mainly in the southern portion of the Lake Michigan region, which includes southeastern Missouri, southern Illinois, Kentucky and south central Indiana to the Ohio state border. During ozone action days, ozone concentrations over 100 ppb_v were usually observed in several locations, such as southern Illinois and central Indiana. Within this region, several locations have been reported by the U.S. EPA to fail to meet ozone NAAQS during this time period as well. In this study, the spatial ozone data from aircraft measurements have been incorporated with meteorological parameters and surface station ozone measurements in order to analyze the ozone distribution patterns and vertical profiles over this region. The ozone horizontal and vertical transport patterns for this region can also be identified through the analysis. This paper summarizes the findings from the aircraft measured ozone data, as well as describes the effort to build a comprehensive ozone database, which has been integrated with a Geographical Information System (GIS) to facilitate use of the data.
