We update the interim results published in the August 2000 issue of JAWMA with 18 months of data, covering August 1998 to January 2000. We update and compare the analysis using Poisson regression in generalized additive models (GAMS). The estimated log-linear association of mortality with various air quality indicators adjusting for smoothed functions of time and meteorological data. The analysis considers daily deaths due to all non-accidental causes, death to persons 65 years or older and deaths in each of the two constituent counties, as well as for specific causes of death. We present findings using only today (lag 0), only yesterday (lag 1), two-day average (average of today and yesterday), first difference (today minus yesterday), three-day average (average of today, yesterday and two days prior) measurements of air quality. We also present findings of a model estimated with today (lag 0) and yesterday (lag 1) included jointly.
