Simulation of 757 Main Landing Gear Landing/Takeoffs at Unimproved Russian Runways

The fracture of a Boeing 757 main landing gear upon landing at a Russian runway and the subsequent fracture of the opposing gear when towing the aircraft off the runway, surprised Boeing engineers, in light of the fact that the aircraft was just 1 year old with 1055 flights accumulated. Subsequent analysis of the damaged gears pointed to the failure of the pivot pin bearing on the main landing gear truck beam. Data surveys from various runways throughout Russia were taken on an instrumented 757 and delivered to the Commercial Airplanes Structures Laboratories, who were assigned the responsibility of simulating the landing and takeoff characteristics of a 757-200 main landing gear at four Russian runways. The simulation required the control of a high frequency, large displacement truck beam oscillation, coupled with low frequency, high inner cylinder loading. This paper describes the resolution of these requirements and summarizes the success in simulating the Transaero Airlines 757 bearing damage. The durability testing results of replacement coated bearings are also summarized.
