In order to fill gaps in the material property space, we find ourselves examining the possibility of using hybrid materials. A hybrid is created when we combine two ore more disparate materials in order to achieve particular material properties. Pin-reinforced foam hybrid sandwich panels represent an attempt to produce a hybrid core structure for improved strength, stiffness and weight savings. The initial examination of these cores focuses on characterizing their typical properties in flexure, with this study focusing upon the transverse bending response. The results for sandwich panels subjected to transverse simply supported bending will be presented for pin-reinforced foam hybrid core as well as pin-only cores.
