The repair of damage in aircraft structure resulting from corrosion can be costly in terms of maintenance dollars and lost flying time. To prevent these costs for aging aircraft fleets from escalating, a comprehensive strategy is being put in place by the Australian Defence Force (ADF) which will more effectively prevent and control corrosion. One component of this strategy is the use of Corrosion Prevention Compounds (CPCs) to treat existing corrosion when found and to leave in place until a more appropriate inspection event occurs. Recent work at DSTO has investigated the ability of CPCs to arrest the rate of propagation of various types of corrosion under laboratory conditions. This paper will present results of this work and show where CPCs have been used in aircraft structure to arrest existing corrosion damage.
