Experiments were conducted to investigate whether chemical treatments can reduce copper release from new pipes. Lime, caustic, sodium bicarbonate, and chlorine treatments decreased copper corrosion by-product release at greater than 95 % confidence, whether the treatment was applied to a new pipe or a pipe that was previously exposed to water for one week. Pre-treatments did not provide long term resistance to continuous sulfide attack.
