Gas products from intra-particle tar decomposition of pyrolysis of large wood particles

Syngas from pyrolysis of fine and large wood particles was measured and compared to investigate the effect of intra-particle tar decomposition which occurred in the large wood particle pyrolysis. Sawdust and wood cylinder with a diameter of 8 mm were pyrolyzed in a thermobalance reactor under Ar atmosphere. When compared with sawdust, wood cylinder showed a significant decrease of tar yield owing to intra-particle tar decomposition. Meanwhile, the amount of carbon monoxide and methane in the syngas from wood cylinder pyrolysis increased. It is implied that tar is decomposed into gas products through intra-particle tar decomposition in large wood particle. The major intra-particle tar decomposition product is carbon monoxide, which accounted for about 40% of the decomposed tar.
