The occurrence of secondary atomization in emulsified fuel is widely accepted to explain the decrease in NO{sub}x, CO and soot emissions. However, little information is available for secondary atomization behavior of emulsified fuel droplet. In this study, the effect of emulsified fuel droplet temperature and its initial diameter on secondary atomization was investigated. A water/n-dodecane emulsified fuel droplet suspended by thermocouple was set into the electric furnace, and secondary atomization behavior of an emulsified fuel droplet was observed by using hi-speed camera (1000 frames/s). The probability of puffing occurrence increased with an increase in furnace wall temperature and with a decrease in initial diameter of emulsified fuel droplet.
