In reciprocating internal combustion engine, combustion chamber wall heat transfer affects engine performance and emissions. The correct understanding of wall heat transfer is one of the most important tasks to improve the engine efficiency. In the present study, the changes of heat transfer rate to the wall with crank angle over a cycle during the compression and expansion stroke were measured using cylinder pressure data. Accurate cylinder pressure change obtained with highly sensitive and stable pressure transducer made it possible to examine the instantaneous heat transfer, and cylinder pressure and engine speed dependency were clarified. The experimental result appears to give important information to improve engine heat transfer correlation.
