In recent years, as heat dissipation rates in power modules are increasing, compact heat sinks with high cooling performance are required. Conventional heat sinks usually have straight fins with straight air flow from lateral fans. In order to obtain a large capacity heat sink, we developed a heat sink having straight fins with bending flow from a backside embedded fan. The cooling performance of the heat sink is increased by the increasing flow rate from the embedded large fan without enlarging the total heat sink volume including the fan volume. We investigated the cooling performance of the heat sink by experiments and CFD analysis. Two times flow rate increase and 34 percent decrease of thermal resistance of the heat sink were obtained comparing with the conventional straight fins with lateral fans.
