The Direct Contact Heat Exchanger(DCHE) is considered to be one of the optimum heat exchangers to transfer cold energy from ice/water slurry to cold water to be supplied to the District Cooling System(DCS) users. Since a DCHE exchanges heat between ice and water through their direct contact and the size of ice particles in the slurry is small, thermal resistance is small and heat transfer area is large compared with those in conventional heat exchangers. In this work, a DCHE was designed and made, and then its heat transfer characteristics were investigated experimentally. And a guide for designing a heat exchanger used a practical DCS was obtained.
