Over the years, the Air Force has changed the method it uses to administer the product acquisition process. In the past we looked to the "yellow metal", militarized equipment, to meet real and perceived Air Force needs. Today, with the many initiatives the Air Force has introduced we are looking to commercial industry to satisfy test and measurement system requirements. One of the considerations when using commercial equipment is how will it operate in the environmental conditions experienced by the military and their worldwide commitments. Another contemplation when acquiring commercial items is how will the Air Force support the item, commercial or organic? Is the data supplied by industry suitable for Air Force maintenance and metrology requirements? All of these issues are valid and must be considered, along with the goal or reducing procurement time, partnering with industry and ultimately supporting the warfighter with the best tools available to meet their needs.
