This paper addresses the performance and test results of a precision fretting corrosion test system that produces micro-dynamics between test samples under controlled environmental conditions. Fretting corrosion in connectors is a major concern in the automotive, computer, and telecommunications industries. This type of corrosion leads to high contact resistance and electrical failure. Several interconnected conditions, primarily induced by the environment, generate fretting corrosion. Conditions include vibration, temperature, connector contact forces, and humidity. The precision fretting corrosion test system is a multi-test site hardware design that controls and measures in-situ, real-time fretting corrosion signatures and test parameters while monitoring background events that can disrupt the fretting mechanism. This paper discusses test hardware, software, and methodology used to test for fretting corrosion.
