Network data processing for milk recording in Greece

The structure of the recording information system in the Greek dairy cattle breeding scheme is described. The database is based on the Microsoft software ACCESS and is used for milk recording and monitoring of the herds. The recording system is usingPCs based on the five local Genetic Improvement Centres, of the Greek Ministry of Agriculture, which communicate with a central Windows NT server, using a commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP). Processing of the data is accomplished both locally andcentrally using the local PCs and a central SQL-server. The feedback of the processed information to the Genetic Improvement Centres is accomplished using a File Transfer Protocol (FTP). An alternative protocol that is taking advantage of the promisingExtensible Mark-up Language (XML) technology for the World Wide Web is under investigation in a pilot study.
