Replacing conventional erosion control materials, such as cast-in-place concrete or riprap, with "softer" vegetation-oriented techniques can provide economically and technically superior approaches to erosion and sediment control. The maximum use of vegetation in erosion and sediment control is often referred to as "green engineering" and produces numerous long-term benefits. This paper synthesizes information, including performance, design tools, and construction details, on the Sedgewood Subdivision project, which utilized various geosynthetic materials to stabilize a channel and reconstruct a steepened slope. A vegetated channel lining reinforced with a turf reinforcement mat (TRM), which is a long term nondegradable rolled erosion control product, was used in the Sedgewood channel. The reinforced turf lining was chosen to replace a riprap lining which had failed to provide adequate erosion protection and was found to be partially responsible for localized flooding. Nonwoven and woven geotextiles as well as a TRM were used in the reinforced steepened slope.
