Treatment of seeds with infrared (IR) alone or in combination with red (R) light stimulated germination and improved vigor of seedlings. The trials included three ornamental (Petunia, Impatiens, Pansy), one vegetable (Tomato), and two field (Soybean and Tobacco) crops. The different species showed different responses to red, infra-red light or combination of both treatments. The response depended upon seed quality (germination percentage), mode of treatment (light quality and duration) and number of treatments (single or multiple exposures). Improvement of the seed treatment technology needs a specific design of lighting system (LED panels) with proper energy output and wavelength combination of light. The combination of these various parameters has to be optimized for each crop. Treated seeds with increased germination potential are desirable in Controlled Environment Systems such as space stations and indoor settings.
