Although much less commonly used on cut foliages than on cut flowers, PGRs are being increasingly considered for use both during production and after harvest of cut foliages. During production, gibberellins have been tested for use in promoting germination of difficult to propagate cut foliage seeds, in increasing stem proliferation and elongation, and as a substitute for cold to induce stem production in cold-requiring cut foliage crops. Since ferns constitute the predominant cut foliage crops andthe production of fern sori and subsequent release of spores is undesirable for cut foliage crops, several commercially available PGRs (ethephon, GA_3, paclobutrazol) have been applied in efforts to reduce sori formation. In efforts to improve the postharvest performance of cut foliages, both cytokinins and gibberellins have been used in attempts to delay senescence (yellowing) of the foliage. In general, cut foliages are less sensitive to ethylene so treatments with ethylene inhibitors have not alwaysbeen beneficial hi delaying senescence.
