Physical Therapy Modalities to Help Acupuncture Treatment of Neuromuscular Disorders

Neuromuscular disorders are the most common cases in the routine of veterinary acupuncturists. The disorders include arthritis, degenerative joint disease and degenerative intervertebral disc disease and are the most responsive to acupuncture treatment. Although the outcome of acupuncture, there are some cases that could be benefit from the use of physical therapy modalities. Physical therapy is the science of the application of biomechanics, physics, anatomy, physiology, and psychology to persons with dysfunction, injury, pain, or physical abnormalities. Veterinary Physical Rehabilitation is the use of noninvasive techniques, excluding veterinary chiropractic, for the rehabilitation of injuries in nonhuman animals. The main modalities are: massage,passive range of motion, stretching, therapeutic exercises, thermotherapy, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, laser therapy and hydrotherapy.
