Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) was created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the mid 70's. They based it on the therapeutic success of three innovative therapists: Milton Erickson (clinical hypnosis), Virginia Satir (family systems), and FritzPerls (Gestalt therapy). Bandler and Grinder investigated how each of them reached such clinical success. They also studied other successful people's mental maps in different areas such as sales, sports, communications, etc., including people who "successfully" recovered from emotional traumas and phobias. They called Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) a group of techniques created to allow people to modify or replace their restrictive mental maps of themselves and their surroundings and their dysfunctional intellectual, emotional and behavioral actions and reactions into functional, useful and positive ones.
