Penn State is conducting a program in which emissions of fine particulate matter (PM_(10) and PM_(2.5)) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) are being characterized when fifing coal-based fuels (i.e., micronized coal and coal-water slurry fuel (CWSF)) in industrial-scale boilers. This paper reviews Penn State's fine particulate program using dead-ended "honeycomb" ceramic filters for fine particulate matter and mercury removal in an industrial boiler and reports preliminary results using nondestructive X-ray computerized tomography (CT) to evaluate the ceramic filters. CT topics discussed include: characterizing the filters before and after use; the ability to map out filled channels in the filters; the ability to detect erosion in the filters; verifying the CT results with scanning electron microscopy (SEM); and assessing filter operability with structural changes.
