CATEGORIZING PERFORMANCE PROBLEMS IN THE ORACLE DATABASE SERVER

The Oracle database server becomes better instrumented with each release, with more initialization parameters to configure and more views to examine. With all this information, it is often difficult to know where to start when investigating a performance problem. This paper will discuss how to determine if server is overworked or waiting for resource and provide some tuning tips for each case. It will also cover some of the new facilities in the optimizer introduced in Oracle 8 for migrating statistics and creating repeatable execution plans.
