Information technology has been widely utilised for the last forty years but it is only in the last five years or so that the Internet has had any real impact on the business community. That impact has been quite dramatic for some organisations. In fact in e-business organisations "IT is the business". It is very easy for users of web based services to move to an alternative service. Therefore, the availability and performance of e-business sites is vital to the success of today's business organisations. The lack of availability or performance of an e-business site can have an immediate and dramatic effect upon the business and profit of an organisation. The effect on the share price of some businesses can also be almost as immediate and as dramatic. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) has never been so tightly linked to the performance of the business in its short history. The design, planning and management of the capacity and performance of today's ICT systems are now in the front line. It is absolutely essential therefore that we carefully manage the capacity and performance of e-business services and do not waste time managing the Capacity Management process itself.
