A virtual tape server presents logical virtual tapes to its host. The server stacks these logical tapes onto real physical tapes. This paper addresses the physical tape requirements needed to support a given number of logical tapes. A model is given which provides an estimate of the number of physical tapes that are required to support a given number of logical tapes. Independent and intermediate variables of this model are described; practical examples of the use of this model are given; and capacity planning rules of thumb are presented.
