A SUSTAINABLE MODERNIST HOUSE IN LOS ANGELES: CASE STUDY HOUSE 22

Case Study House 22-the Stahl House-, designed by Pierre Koenig in 1960, and built in Los Angeles, is analyzed, using real data and with an energy-modeling program, to evaluate its climate responsive design strategies. Temperature and humidity values are recorded with portable data loggers placed inside and outside the house while keeping a log of the opening and closing of the windows. Parametric information from the house was input in Solar 5, to compare energy consumption when using HVAC systems, and indoor temperatures, with a hypothetical building of similar area built according to the Current California Energy Code, Title 21. Surprisingly, even though Case Study House 22 technically does not comply with current energy codes it is still an effective passive building that uses no cooling energy and little heating.
