The use of low pressure in vacuum carburizing has proven to be the answer to revitalizing the interest of the heat treating community in this technology. Using low pressure methods sooting has been eliminated as a concern in the vacuum carburizing process. A basic understanding of the methods and techniques of this technology is presented as are examples of production vacuum carburized loads. The difference in hydrocarbon gas chemistry between the various methods of vacuum carburizing will be reviewed from a scientific viewpoint. A comparison with atmosphere carburizing is also provided.
