Fluazifop-butyl and sethoxydim are members of aryloxyphenoxypropionate (AOPP) and cyclohexanedione (CHD) herbicides, respectively, and used for controlling grass weeds in broad leaf crops. We conducted the laboratory experiments to compare the physiological effects (phytotoxic activity, anti-auxin-like action, ethylene evolution, inhibition of proton excretion, and induction of electrolyte leakage) and biochemical effect (inhibition of acetyl-CoA carboxylase) of the herbicides on oat (Avena sativa L. cv. Zenshin), a sensitive species to herbicides. Although the structures of two herbicides are distinctly different, we conclude that fluazifop-butyl and sethoxydim have very similar action mechanism which leads to disruption of membrane integrity.
