The combination of an electric drive system with double-layer capacitors as high power short-time storage devices enables a marked increase in the energy efficiency of city buses. In case of dieselelectric drive systems it is also possible to reduce exhaust and noise emissions, particularly in bus-stop areas. Within the context of a project promoted by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Transport and Technology the first European city bus with a diesel-electric drive system and doublelayer capacitors as high power storage devices has been built by MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG in cooperation with the companies Siemens Verkehrstechnik and EPCOS.
