As a big scooters and bicycles manufacturing & using country, China has a quantity of bicycles of 450 million at the end of 2000 and its automobile industry development is still at the stage of beginning. China is a developing country and its per capita GDP and consumption ability is comparatively low. Due to the fact of the serious air pollution in China` medium and large cities caused by auto emission and coal-firing, it has drawn more and more attentions from government and environmental protection personage. A series of related policies have been published by regional governments in order to encourage the development of environmental protection transportation means including the development of electric bicycle. According the actual situation in China, the article has fully expounded the feasibility, reality and necessity for developing electric bicycles in China and fully analyzed the present status and future prospects in developing electric bicycle in China. The article has been related to the city transportation industry policies related in China, technical development of electric bicycles and city environment status in China, auxiliary products: body, battery, motor and etc. In a word, according to the present economic development condition and environmental protection situation in China, it is feasible and necessary to develop electric bicycles. As an environmental protection transportation vehicle for urban and rural residents, electric bicycles will be in the customers` good graces and enjoy a prosperous development prospect in the future. As a kingdom of scooters & bicycles manufacturer, by the end of 2000, the annual production volume of scooters & bicycles have reached 9 million and 30 million respectively. It is estimated that per 40 persons buy a bicycle every year, which occupies 20% of that of the whole world. At present, the gasoline-drive bicycle number has arrived to 450 million in China. Now, in Shanghai, there are 600 thousand gasoline-drive bicycle, which caused to the serious air pollution. In order to further lower the emission made by scooters & gasoline-drive bicycles and purify the air in cities, now, over 120 enterprises are engaged in the R & D and manufacturing of electric bicycles, including body, battery & motor and charging system for electric bicycle, and great strides has been made in these aspects. Certain scale of lot production has been formed and over 30 manufacturers have pushed their products to the market. It is a trend that bicycle will be gradually replaced by passenger car & electric bicycle. The followings are the sale volume of electric bicycle in China: In 1997, the sale volume was 15 thousand sets In 1998, the sale volume was 54 thousand sets. In 1999, the sale volume was 120 thousand sets. In 2000, the sale volume was 180 thousand sets and it is estimated that the sale volume will be 300 thousand sets in 2001. Analyzing China` s domestic market, the sale volume in Shanghai & its surrounding areas occupies a big ratio, in 1997, the sale volume of electric bicycle was 4.3 thousand sets, and in 1998, 1999 and 2000, the sale volume was 10 thousand sets, 22 thousand sets and 43 thousand sets respectively. From this statistics, about a quarter of total sale volume was sold in Shanghai & its surrounding area, including Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Fujian, etc., which was 30% of the total. The production volume was 200 thousand sets in 2000. The production of eight manufacturers: Shang Hai Yilaida Corporation, Nanjing Tiandi Corporation, Changzhou Tiansun Corporation, Suzhou Xiaolingyang Corporation, Shanghai Qianhe Corporation, Shanghai Kangli Corporation, Zhejinag Wolong Corporation and Tianjin Xinjie Corporation, has arrived to more than 100 thousand sets, which occupied 50% of the total in China and their products have been sold to Europe, America & Australia and Southeast Asian regions, totally over 10 countries and regions.
