Due to the high level of specific energy Lithium ion batteries are promising candidates for various future car applications such as Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) and 42V electric supply systems (VEPS). The Li-Ion battery system has achieved remarkable progress during the last years and there is still room for further improvement. Particularly, Li-Ion batteries are attractive for 42V batteries. Depending on the use of electric components and electronic devices in the car, the 42V battery design ranges from pure high power to pure high energy applications. Especially in case of supplying luxury features, e.g. air conditioning systems, batteries with a high storage capability of more than 1 kWh are needed. Since Li-Ion batteries exceed a power density of 1000 W/kg at a specific energy of more than 60 Wh/kg they also attain increasing interest by car manufacturers for HEVs. For both applications different electrode technologies enabling optimization of cell performance with regard to various requirements have been developed.
