With current technology, Internet backbone capacity is expected to run out. This leaves carriers with two options: light additional fiber or look to the network equipment manufacturers to develop new products and technologies that will allow them to increase capacity on their existing lit fibers. However, most carriers do not have fiber to light. Even so, this is a very costly option and not the most economical alternative. New long-haul transmission technologies must be implemented to support this capacity and advanced optical networking is the obvious technology to solve these bottlenecks. The question at hand is which technology or technologies and will they be available soon enough and with enough bandwidth to provide sufficient relief in an economical fashion. Performance problems, including less than optimized rates for broadband access, can also be solved with adding additional bands. The increased bandwidth from the optical backbone network will allow for greater availability to the access network. The new technologies for higher capacity in optical transmission decrease the cost of bandwidth, making the use of all three-transmission bands an economical way to not only increase capacity, but also decrease performance problems.
