This paper describes the implementation of a modern drainage project aimed at increasing the natural consolidation rate of silt by several orders of magnitude. Once completed the project results in a significant increase in storage capacity in the underwater cells or lagoons used for the storage of mildly polluted silt and other fine-grained dredged sediment. Discharge measurements from the vacuum pumps employed to dewater the silt and hydrographical survey data are presented to illustrate the methods used to monitor the project's progress upon installation of the drains and to indicate the storage volumes gained.
