Temperature distribution and thermal buckling analyses were performed on square plate with central cutouts exposed to a uniform temperature increase. The cutouts used were square holes. The finite element program STARS was used to study the effects of hole size and material types on the critical buckling temperature of square plates with square central cutouts. Analysis shows buckling temperatures generally increase with hole size. Titanium alloy plates proved to yield better results than did the aluminum plates. The results presented show that introducing appropriately sized holes in a plate can actually increase its thermal buckling strength and at the same time reduce the weight of the panel.
