The methodologies for evaluation of K_0 on natural soils are still far from being consecrated, with special emphasis on residual soils, where there is a strong lack of documented experience. This paper will give an insight on the up-to-date experience on this subject, giving emphasis to results obtained in some experimental sites in Porto's Metropolitan zone. The importance of the accuracy on the determination of these values for modeling underground works will be summarily illustrated with a comparison between numerical simulations and observations of real tunneling recent case history.
