The value of the UK Water Industry's buried infrastructure assets is estimated to be in the region of ￡38 billion. The maintenance of the assets is essential if the industry is to satisfy the regulatory requirements and prevent problems arising in the future and this requires large amounts of capital investment. In order to assess current and future asset maintenance requirements, water companies must acquire a detailed knowledge of the condition of their buried pipelines. Advanced Engineering Solutions Limited has designed and built non-intrusive inspection tools for the external inspection of cast iron water mains. The ECAT (External Condition Assessment Tool) enables larger diameter trunk mains to be investigated, and the S19 inspection tool has been developed for smaller diameter distribution mains.
