The following paper introduces a new three layer polyethylene (3LPE) steel pipe coating system suited for high temperature pipeline applications Lab and customer tests indicate a good long-term performance of the AMPLIFY GR 320/HDPE 12110G system that exceeds the requirements of DIN 30670. Plastic can be used to coat steel pipes in oil and gas applications and thus help minimize the potential for corrosion of underground steel pipes. The plastic coating system typically consists of three layers: (1) Fusion bonded epoxy (FBE) on the surface of the steel pipe (2) Adhesive (3) Top coat made from polyethylene or polypropylene. As the main focus of steel pipe coating is on corrosion protection the polyolefin raw materials must contribute to the performance of the coating during the entire lifetime of the pipeline, ensuring protection against extreme external conditions, mechanical impacts or degradation by heat or UV irradiation. Critical parameters for the polyolefin materials are excellent adhesion and adhesion retention, durability, crack resistance and long-term stability but also low levels of built-in stress during the coating process.
