Effects of the AVAS regulation on the noise emission of battery electric vehicles

Battery electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles face engineers with a lot of challenges and also affect the vast field of vehicle acoustics. While many issues can be solved with standard NVH tools, including rotational acoustics and standard spectral analysis, some things have to be reconsidered overall. The combustion engine has always been the dominant noise source and been masking most of the other noises. This accounts for exterior noise and interior noise. While it might only be an issue of comfort within the vehicle, the lack of a dominant source in the exterior might even pose a threat to others, these include pedestrians, animals and bicyclists. Therefore, an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) has been defined and is already implemented. In this work, we will discuss the current AVAS regulation and the effects on the environment. Further, we will briefly describe other phenomena that we have experienced while investigating BEVs in General.
