Participating in indoor cycling studio classes is an excellent way to increase your heart rate, condition your muscles, and build up your endurance. But is it safe for your hearing? This paper explores the reasons for loud music in exercise facilities such as spinning facilities. Of interest are the exposures to instructors who may have several hours of exposure per day as well as participants. Obviously, hearing protection may be worn but does the hearing protection reduce physiological benefits of the loud noise? Inspired by Eldred's development of Pascal-squared-seconds ("Pasques") as a metric of noise exposure, this paper presents the "Noise Exposure Unit" as an approach to estimating NIHL, which correlates well with the ANSI S3.44-1996 model. This approach is used to estimate the noise exposure and NIHL at 4000 Hz for those who regularly attend indoor cycling classes.
