Comparison of Ceramic on Ceramic to Ceramic on Polyethylene Total Hip Replacement

The follow up results on 726 total hip replacements using either ceramic-on-ceramic or ceramic-on-ultra high molecular weight polyethylene, implanted in an institution over the last 19 years is presented. The prostheses had either a ceramic on ceramic articulation or a ceramic on ultra high molecular weight polyethylene couple. Survivorship analysis showed 81.9 percent and 96.6 percent survival at 15 years for the total ceramic and ceramic on polyethylene group respectively.
