The mismatch in thermal expansion coefficients between metallic substrates as Ti6A14V alloy and hydroxyapatite as a coating can cause failures of coatings. Therefore, a new calcium titanium phosphate composition was developed to overcome this mismatch. The biological behaviour of the new material was investigated histologically in an animal model using the distal femur of female Chinchilla rabbits for intervals of 7, 28 and 84 days postoperatively. The surface of the material was bonded to the bone regenerate after 28 days, and to an even greater extend after 84 days postoperatively. Areas of the interface with soft tissue contact displayed a weak cellular response with few macrophages. Therefore, this new material is a promising candidate for bioactive coatings of metallic implants for orthopaedic or dental applications.
