In the nondestructive evaluation and material characterization of composites, ultrasonic velocity is a useful physical quantity because it is directly related to the density and elastic moduli of the material. Changes in composite material properties, such as fiber resin ratio and volume fraction of porosity, therefore exhibit themselves as corresponding changes in the ultrasonic velocity. C-scan images based on ultrasonic velocity are widely used in the NDE of composite materials because they provide a visual and quantitative picture for the spatial variation of the material property.
