The Photosystem II core complex (PSII cc) is a large, multisubunit protein pigment complex consisting of at least 17 subunits (table 1) of which 14 are located within the photosynthetic thylakoid membrane: the reaction center heterodimer D1 and D2 proteins (psbA and psbD gene products), the heterodimeric cytochrome b-559 (psbE and psbF gene products), the two chlorophyll a binding inner light harvesting antenna proteins CP43 (psbC) and CP47 (psbB) and the smaller subunit psbH to psbN, and psbX (Barry et al., 1994). The oxygen evolving PSII cc also includes the membraneextrinsic cytochrome c-550 (psbV), the 12 kDa subunit (psbU) and the manganese stabilizing 33 kDa protein (psbO). These three extrinsic proteins are located on the lumenal side of thePSII cc (Han et al., 1994).
