In the present paper, an investigation was directed towards the formation mechanisms for diamond ground and polished granite surfaces by monitoring their appearances at each separated stages ranging from sawing to fine polishing. SEM was employed to study the morphologies of machined surfaces and XRD was employed to analyze the structure of polished surfaces. Obvious traces of ductile flowing on the machined surfaces together with the consistent XRD results for both polished and basal surfaces indicate that mechanical action plays an important role in the forming of glossy granite surfaces.
