The influence of ice accretion shape on the ice load on cylinders is examined using an analytical model based on a conservation of mass equation. We consider a family of two-parameter shapes, defined by the contact and growth angles. We show that the a priori assumption concerning the ice shape is crucial for load determination, because the shape influences the mass of intercepted precipitation and this in turn determines the ice load when the ice accretion is dry (i.e. no dripping). A sensitivity analysis of the analytical model has been undertaken, and the results are presented in the form of dimensionless relations between radial equivalent ice thickness, total precipitation and the contact and growth angles that specify the ice shape.
