MR DHRUV SAWHNEY proposed giving a quick overview of the Indian sugar industry and then, as a number of other speakers had done, to make a projection on the situation in five to ten years' time. More importantly, he wished to identify what he believedto be the key drivers - so that others might make their own hypotheses as to "what might unfold in this land of over 1 billion people".India was the largest producer of sugarcane and of sugar and the largest consumer of sugar. There was also the largest amount of co-generated power installed in India. He invited those present to consider the impact of sugar on the Indian economy.
