Icons remain in use as a means of interacting with computers. Now such Graphical User Interfaces are also being used in handheld devices and appliances, often using small displays. With these new appliances and means of accessing resources, the visually impaired find such interfaces difficult to access. For users who possess functional vision, the graphical nature of the interface is not in itself a problem. Instead the interfaces and their components need to be examined and redesigned in order to be more effective. This paper presents the potential use of animated icons as a means of increasing accessibility in general and in the case of limited display space.
