A novel extended cavity arrangement for a laser diode is proposed. It uses a dynamic holographic filter made of a photorefractive crystal and a distant plane mirror. Single-mode operation has been achieved using a 810 nm diffraction limited laser diode. The time evolution of the laser spectrum from the initial multimode operation until the final single-mode steady state is presented. The holographic filter increases the current range over which the laser is single-mode.
