The bioresorbable plastic material's project at Pittsburg State University is driven by two major factors: ⅰ. FDA's (Food & Drug Administration) requirement that farm, bull castration operations be carried out using non-metallic, non-corrosion or non-contamination-susceptible clips, and ⅱ. Washington (Kansas) Veterinary Clinic's bull castration clip production requirements. The concept and use of bioresorbable materials in castration clip production addresses FDA's concern about contamination of processed meat. Starch being a pure food material is a natural and logical choice for a polymer-based bioresorbable clip but it. does not have all the characteristics required in this application. Hence, the need for the formulation and development of biodegradable polymer-based blends that incorporate the reinforcement and cost-reduction attributes of (corn) starch.
