The technique of diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) has been recently developed for the in situ measurement of reactive meta1 species in natural waters, sediments and soils by researchers at Lancaster University UK. Analytes diffuse through a layer of polyacrylamide gel of known thickness (Δg) and area (A) then bind to a specially designed further layer of binding phase. The mass (M) of metals in the phase after a known deployment time (t) is measured by Zeeman furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (ZFAAS) after acid elution.
