Lessons derived from results of industrial trials, on both alumina-based castables and magnesia-based castables, in steel ladles, are analyzed, back-up with significant laboratory results. On magnesia side, merits of spinel and forsterite bondings are compared. On the alumina side the successful use of magnesia over synthetic spinel is confirmed. Carbon is definitively a plus to increase the penetration resistance for any of those castables, in contact with steel-making slags. The nature and the mode of insertion of carbon are capital parameters. The strength of the castables in relation with the bonding-sintering behaviors is a key parameter.
